Al Jardine and Johnny Rivers Thinking Green

"This is terrible. We got to write something about this" (Johnny Rivers)

Al Jardine and Johnny Rivers are planning to write a charity song in the wake of the Gulf Coast oil disaster. The Beach Boys co-founder first approached his long-time pal about recording an additional verse for his own song “Don’t Fight the Sea” when Rivers proposed creating an entirely new work to spotlight the environmental tragedy.

Johnny, who grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was especially outraged and told Al, “This is terrible. We got to write something about this.”

Jardine says while the spill has brought the risk of off-shore drilling into the headlines, he’s long advocated conserving oil and cutting the use of plastics in his household. He avoids buying plastic products, especially drinking water in disposable plastic bottles. And he and his wife now use reusable cloth bags for their groceries. As opposed to using the plastic ones, these “don’t wind up in the ocean [where they can] choke the whales.”

Listen as Al Jardine and Johnny Rivers talk about their plans to write a charity song in the wake of the Gulf Coast oil disaster.
